Week 36: How Do You See Yourself?

I’ve never been one to worry too much about my age. I think it’s because I have always FELT younger than I am. Seriously…I feel just like I did in high school…minus my body aches, of course!

There have been a few times in my life, though when I reached a certain number and I panicked just a little…30 was a hard one for me (really??!! what I wouldn’t give to be 30!) And 50….I was so depressed that day I didn’t even get out of my pajama’s until 3 in the afternoon!

Now that I am 52 all I keep thinking is…only 8 more years and I am SIXTY!!!! Oh my GOSH!!!

How Do You See Yourself?

There are somedays I look in the mirror and all I see are  my wrinkles, extra fat around my chin and age spots. On those days I get depressed thinking everyone I meet will see them, too. My worse fear is someone seeing me as an overweight,  frumpy looking, middle-age woman!

But in reality I am so much MORE than what I see…YOU are, too!! Wrinkles and age spots are inevitable. But an excitement for living, a spring in our step, a passion in our Heart…those things not only light us up INSIDE but SHOW on the outside! I have met women 10, 20 years older than me that RADIATE BEAUTY. And after talking with them it’s obvious it’s because they are doing what they LOVE. They are taking care of themselves, loving themselves and ACCEPTING themselves.

Our Assignment

Our assignment this week comes from a magnificent book on aging…”Younger by the Day” by Victoria Moran. Here is a snippet…

“In order to remember how wonderful she is, a woman needs 50 Fabulous Adjectives to describe herself. These adjectives should describe you best AND describe the best of you. They can be about how you look, but more importantly how you FEEL.”

Moran goes on to say that if you have trouble coming up with 50 words think about all the roles you play…wife, girlfriend, mother, sister, daughter, caregiver, student, seeker, artist, etc. She also says feel free to ask your loved ones to give you a word that they think best describes you.

Our goal with this exercise to start SEEING our Hearts instead of your looks. We can get so caught up in our size, our wrinkles, our hairstyles that we forget who it is WE REALLY ARE.

Feel free to create a journal page listing all 50 adjectives or just pick out a few that you love. For even more fun you could create 50 index or playing cards with ONE WORD on each card so you have a complete deck of 50 Fabulous Adjectives to inspire you whenever you need a boost!

Affirmation: I am more than my Age. I am a Beautiful, Strong, Creative Woman that LIVES Life with Energy and Grace.

How many times do we overthink our…day, night, work, writings, workouts, life, art?

Daily? Hourly? Every waking moment?

This is our last week of Creativity in “I Say Yes” and it’s all about having FUN! It’s all about not overthinking anything and just putting paint, markers, crayons, paper, etc down in our journals.

This week we are creating circles!!

There is NO need for perfection this week…we can be as elementary as we like! Our goal is just to let our art flow out of us onto the paper.

Directions

*Put on your favorite music

*In your journal start drawing circles…using a paintbrush, marker, pen, pencil or even your finger

*Take a few circles a day and begin filling them in with shapes, doodles, flowers, words, whatever inspires you

*Each circle’s contents can represent your current mood, a person in your life, a dream or goal, and idea, something you have been wanting to try, words, etc.

It’s a proven fact…when we tell ourselves something over and over again it becomes truth…at least in our little worlds. And when it comes to being creative I can only imagine the things you tell yourself…

“But I’m not as good as her.”

‘I could NEVER be as creative as you.”

“I have never been the creative type.”

“I can’t draw or paint or (whatever!!)….”

I used to be just like you. But finally, after years and years of creating and doing it anyway I am proud to say on MOST days I love my work and feel confident sharing it!

Our Assignment

This week we are going to create a Creative Affirmation Poster. Here’s what you will need…

Create your poster using  images, words and phrases that speak to you and your Creativity. Anything that lights you up and sparks your creative mind should be on your poster!! Welcome to Week 33 of “I Say Yes”! What a WONDERFUL 33 weeks it has been! We have all learned so much about ourselves, our Art and each other. If you haven’t heard of “I Say Yes”…here are all 33 prompts. Be sure and join our Private Facebook Group here.

Step out of your Art Journaling Comfort Zone

It’s so easy to get in a Creative Rut! I encourage you to flip through your journals, being mindful of what you see repeated in your pages. For me it’s pretty easy to spot…At least 90% of the time I use either a magazine girl or vintage girl in my pages.

And while I will always use these images in my Art  (I LOVE THEM) it’s good to do something DIFFERENT! Whenever we try a new technique or add something fresh to our pages it helps our Creativity bloom in ways we never imagined.

Our Challenge

This week we are gonna focus on breaking free from our creative box we have put ourselves in. Remember you don’t have to make big changes…by putting a twist on what you already do you will be inspired in ways you never dreamed of.

Week 32: Let Go!

Let Go and Trust Yourself

This week as we continue on this path of Creativity…we are going to learn to LET GO. The very best way I know to do that is by gathering up various mediums, a few different substrates and get to work!

Our goal this week is to create 10 layered backgrounds for our journals, cards or just to enjoy. There should be very little thought put into this rather the entire objective of this exercise is to be intuitive.

What you need

*copy paper, deli paper, watercolor paper and/or your journal

*acrylic paint, watercolor paint, gesso, watercolor crayons, etc.

*stencils, stamps, masks

*markers, paint pens, pencils

*patterned paper, book paper

*glue stick or Mod Podge

Gather your supplies and block out an hour or so to do nothing but create! Turn on your favorite music, show or just enjoy the silence. Begin putting down paint, papers or whatever inspires you. Your goal is to create at least three layers per background…not thinking at all about your outcome…just focusing on the act of doing.

What is Mind Mapping?

In the printable above and mentioned a few times in my Creativity print off you will see the phrase “Mind Mapping”. I do explain it in your print out but wanted to share a visual with you here…

In the center you put whatever it is you are declaring or want to work on…

Then you draw arrows away from that and write out any thoughts that come to mind then circle. I find this exercise to be EXTREMELY HELPFUL!!!!

Week 30: Joyful Days Planner

Today I will add JOY to my Life

It’s Week 30 here at “I Say Yes” and I don’t know about you but I want more JOY in my days! And while it’s important to keep a planner for our sanity it’s just as important to keep a record of the JOY in our life. I have created a Joyful Days Planner to help you do just that!

Our goal for the week is to fill our Joyful Days planner out for the next 7 days. The first two questions are meant to be filled out in the morning and the last three before bedtime. By the end of seven days you will be able to look back on your week and SEE all the great things that truly do make up your days. I KNOW life is hard and so many of us are going through BIG struggles right now…but I KNOW it’s also true that even though those HARD things are going on…we have MUCH to be grateful for. And GRATEFUL HEARTS ARE HEARTS FILLED WITH JOY!!

Week 29: Planning Your Days

There is a Better Way

We all wish for more time…more time to get things done…more time to enjoy our loved ones…more time spent creating. What if I told you that there IS a way? There is! And while it may be something you already do my hope is this week will shed a new light on your planning and give you more strategies to plan your days.

I just love this quote by Annie Dillard…

A schedule defends from chaos and whim. It is a net for catching days. It is a scaffolding on which a worker can stand and labor with both hands at sections of time.

I started keeping a planner back in my early working days with one of those At-a-glance planners from Wal-Mart. By the time my kids were in middle school and in every sport/after school activity imaginable I upgraded to an official Stephen Covey Day Timer. I LOVED IT!!! Then a few years ago when Me and My Big Ideas came out with their Happy Planner I KNEW I had to have one!!!

Regardless of what I use for keeping track of my To-Do lists, who to call, where I need to be, etc…there is no doubt that having a plan not only gives me more time to do the things I love but keeps me sane!!

Where Can Our Time Be Better Spent?

Last week we talked about Time Wasters. I believe the biggest time waster in America today is Social Media. How many times do you turn to your phone to check on Facebook, Instagram or Twitter? Or what about games like Candy Crush or Farmville? After last week I realized the ONLY time I play Candy Crush is when I am avoiding something. WOW!

I KNOW there is a better way to spend my time…after all time is so precious!

Our Assignment

This week let’s PROMISE ourselves we will start taking back our Precious Time! We will stop wasting our lives scrolling through Facebook, playing phone games and other things that contribute to us living on Auto-Pilot!!!

We will start out slowly…I understand that no matter how bad the habit…it can be so hard to break them all at once! Soooo…this week let’s take 20 to 30 minutes AWAY from our Time wasters and ADD 20 to 30 minutes to our Self Care. When you find yourself needing a mental break and turning to your phone instead why not try…

*writing in your journal

*make a Top Ten list of what’s good in your life

*go outside

*Take a walk

*create a background in your journal

Week 27: What’s Your Routine?

I don’t know about you but I am so READY for a FRESH New Beginning! Fall is my absolute FAVORITE time of year and I want to be sure and not miss one Beautiful thing about it! I have known for several months I NEED to get back to my Morning Routine, setting goals and enjoying some ME time. But sadly I have let the stresses in my life overtake my time and instead of filling my Soul up I have been living on Auto-Pilot.

Well NO MORE!

That’s why for the next four months I am engaging in “I Say Yes Bootcamp”.

Let’s make a fresh start this month by taking a look at our time wasters. What are they? For me it’s anything that totally sucks me away from the task at hand. I can be so focused on blog writing or creating in my journal and go on-line to check something out “real quick”…before I know it 20 minutes have passed and I am still scrolling through Facebook or reading People on-line! It not only drives me crazy but drains my energy.

My Time Wasters list looks like this…

*Facebook, on-line quizzes, on-line gossip magazines

*TV

*Candy Crush on my phone

When I really stop to think about I know I waste an INSANE about of time on-line! I KNOW once I get that under control I will become so much more productive!

The second thing we are going to work on this week is our Daily Routine. Remember our first week of class and how we talked about living on Auto Pilot? When I don’t take the time to establish a Daily Routine my life goes off track and I start living on Auto-Pilot again. It’s a place I don’t want to be.

Living on Auto-Pilot means I am not taking care of myself. It means I am sitting on the couch, eating and mindlessly watching TV. It means depression sets in and I begin to feel bad about myself and everything around me.

It’s not living.

Girls, I want us to LIVE.

I want us to THRIVE.

To find JOY in everything!

What is a Daily Routine?

When we have a Daily Routine we have a sense of ownership of our Time, our life…even if it feels like we are falling apart. Somehow the very act of DOING has energy in it that helps us be more Joy-Full.

*I want you to think back to your Auto-Pilot Days (and maybe that is today or maybe it was months ago)…then think back to a day when you had taken the time to make a list, set some goals…have a routine. How did each of those times make you feel? Do you see, feel the difference?

A Daily Routine can look like many different things! When I am running on all cylinders and at my best this is what MY Daily Routine looks like…

*Up early, coffee and time with God, create a To-Do List

*Walk, stretch, move my body

*Shower/get ready for the day

*Back in studio to check SM, emails, write, create

*Work or clean house or run errands

It looks pretty simple right? It is and it makes a HUGE difference in my days, my week and my mental health is always so much BETTER! Sadly I haven’t done this morning routine in FOREVER and let me tell you…I KNOW it. I haven’t been very productive at all and I am not filling myself up!!!

Our Assignment

*Take a look at your week. Fill in ALL the MUSTS…work, school stuff, kids practices, church, clubs, etc. Then fill in calendar with stuff you TRULY want to do…workouts, creative time, writing time, Social Media time, anything that YOU want to do during your week…the stuff that FILLS your Soul UP!

*Let’s come up with a Morning Routine or an Evening Routine…you decide where it best fits into your schedule. Write down those things that are REALLY important to you and decide the most important ones. If you want a morning routine are you going to have to wake up a bit earlier? Maybe your Daily Routine fits better in the middle of the day. Remember you get to decide what’s best for YOU!

Your Art Journal
